Eyesafe Awarded U.S. Patent for Multi-Notch Eyewear Designed for Screen Light

Eyewear designed for screen light: clear eyeglass lenses in front of a glowing screen, colors unchanged through the lens

U.S. Patent No. 12,761,502 covers eyeglass lenses built for the light screens actually emit: narrow absorbers tuned to display light, including the longer-wavelength blue of OLED screens, with color kept true.

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 13, 2026. Eyesafe®, the worldwide leader in screen health technology and standards, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent No. 12,761,502, “Ophthalmic Systems Having Improved Light Filtration.” The patent extends the multi-notch approach behind Eyesafe display technology into eyewear: lenses that absorb narrow, targeted bands of screen light and leave the rest of the spectrum alone.

Lenses designed around the screen

Most people now spend several hours a day looking at a phone, laptop or TV, and most of that light comes from LED and OLED displays. Those displays do not emit an even rainbow. They emit sharp peaks of blue, green and red, and the blue of an OLED screen typically sits at a longer wavelength than the blue of an LED screen, closer to the light that most affects circadian rhythm.

Eyewear has generally treated “blue light” as one broad band at the violet end of the spectrum. The ’502 patent takes a different route. It covers lens material made with multiple narrow absorbers, each tuned to a specific part of the light a screen emits:

  • Blue to cyan, the high-energy blue and circadian-active light where display emission concentrates;
  • Yellow to orange, between a display’s green and red primaries;
  • Red, at the red edge of the display’s output.

The patent issued with 22 claims.

Absorb the blue. Sharpen the color.

The reason for several narrow notches instead of one broad filter is color. A lens that only removes blue tips everything toward yellow, which is why so many blue light glasses look amber. The notches between and beyond the display’s primaries sharpen green and red at the same time, so the light reaching the eye stays balanced and the screen still looks like the screen.

It is the same principle Eyesafe applies inside displays and screen protection, now specified for a lens. The patent’s description also covers use with other wearables used alongside a display, including AR, VR and XR headsets.

“Screens changed, and eyewear has not caught up,” said Justin Barrett, founder and CEO of Eyesafe. “An OLED phone does not emit the same blue as the LED monitors most blue light lenses were designed around. This patent covers lenses tuned to the light people actually look at all day, with precise notches instead of a yellow tint. It gives our eyewear and lens partners a protected foundation for clear, everyday lenses designed for the digital age.”

Part of a growing portfolio

The ’502 patent was invented by Eyesafe’s Derek Harris, Laney Omole and Paul Herro. It claims priority to a provisional application filed Feb. 28, 2024, and joins a portfolio of more than 100 patents and trade secrets covering light management in displays, screen protection and eyewear. A continuation application is pending.
