Lenovo Unveils the Industry’s First Laptops to Achieve Eyesafe Display Requirements 3.0, Verified by UL Solutions

In a major step forward for consumer electronics, Lenovo has announced the world’s first laptops to meet the newly released Eyesafe® Display Requirements 3.0, with verification by UL Solutions—a globally recognized independent safety science organization. This achievement reflects Lenovo’s continued leadership in designing products that prioritize user wellness without compromising performance.

Balancing Performance with Consumer Needs

With U.S. adults now averaging over 11 hours of screen time each day,1 and growing dependence on laptops for work and entertainment, the type of light emitted by digital displays is gaining more attention. While brightness and resolution have traditionally driven display innovation, research increasingly shows that blue light exposure may affect both eye health and circadian rhythms.

The Eyesafe Display Requirements 3.0 represent the most advanced criteria to date for managing blue light while preserving color accuracy. These requirements are developed in collaboration with leading eye doctors and scientists to balance blue light emissions with the high-performance needs of modern users.

For the first time, the requirements include two critical metrics:

  • Radiance Protection Factor (RPF®) – Quantifies the amount of blue light emitted in the 435–440 nm range, which research indicates is most closely linked to long-term vision health concerns.2
  • Circadian Protection Factor (CPF) – A newly introduced metric that assesses a display’s output of circadian-disrupting blue light, supporting better alignment with natural sleep-wake cycles.

Lenovo’s Leadership

In April, Lenovo announced that six ThinkPad models achieved Eyesafe RPF criteria while four additional models achieved both Eyesafe RPF and CPF requirements. This dual recognition reflects Lenovo’s investment in innovation that aligns with evolving research and consumer demand to reduce blue light exposure.

“We applaud Lenovo for taking a leadership role with their newly UL Eyesafe Verified ThinkPad models—validated to reduce specific wavelengths of blue light associated with visual discomfort and circadian disruption,” said Justin Barrett, CEO and Co-Founder of Eyesafe. “As the first laptops to achieve Eyesafe Display Requirements 3.0—the most advanced criteria for blue light emissions and color performance—Lenovo is showcasing its leadership across the industry.”

Science-Backed Verification, Trusted by Consumers

UL Solutions plays a vital role in this announcement, serving as the trusted third-party verification partner for Eyesafe. UL Solutions Marketing Claim Verification helps eliminate confusion in the market by providing credible validation of manufacturer claims. As a result, buyers—from enterprise IT decision-makers to health-conscious consumers—can make more informed purchasing choices when selecting devices that better support visual comfort and sleep quality.

“More people are reporting eye strain, headaches, and sleep disturbances tied to prolonged screen use. Reducing blue light plays an important role in addressing these concerns,” said Dr. William Trattler, a member of the Eyesafe Vision Health Advisory Board. “By meeting Eyesafe Display Requirements 3.0, Lenovo ThinkPad laptops help minimize blue light that could affect visual comfort, while contributing to more restful sleep.”

What’s Next

Eyesafe Requirements are more than a specification—they are becoming a meaningful differentiator for brands wishing to standout in a competitive marketplace. Consumers are no longer just comparing resolution and refresh rates—they’re evaluating how their devices impact eye comfort and sleep patterns.

With Lenovo taking the first step, other OEMs are likely to follow, especially as major retailers, school systems, and enterprises become more educated on the benefits of blue light mitigation

Eyesafe and UL Solutions are actively engaging with industry stakeholders to build awareness and drive broader adoption of Eyesafe Display Requirements 3.0. With a streamlined verification process and robust marketing benefits from Eyesafe, UL Eyesafe Verification goes beyond compliance—helping OEMs differentiate their products, strengthen brand value and accelerate sales across global markets.
