Eyesafe Technology TUV Rheinland reduced blue light certified

TÜV Rheinland and Eyesafe Begin Industry-Leading Blue Light Certification for Upcoming Fall Phone Launches

With over 60-million units certified to-date, TÜV Rheinland and Eyesafe have begun certification of blue light-filtering screen protectors for phones launching later this year.

TÜV Rheinland Group, a trusted third-party testing and certification agency, collaborates with Eyesafe, a global leader in blue light management solutions, to offer blue light certification for screen protection accessories. Products are tested by TÜV Rheinland against the Eyesafe® Accessory Requirements 2.0. These requirements were developed with eye care professionals and scientists to provide an industry standard for blue light filtration and color performance.

The TÜV Rheinland Blue Light Reduction certification program was announced in 2023. It measures light filtration at 435-440 nanometers (nm), the wavelength identified by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) as the range with the highest impact on retinal health.[1] To receive TÜV Rheinland certification, products must filter at least 20% of blue light at 435-440 nm and meet criteria for correlated color temperature and luminance.

“There is growing concern about the potential effects of blue light exposure on our eyes, sleep and overall health,” said Dr. David Friess, an optometrist and chair of the Eyesafe Vision Health Advisory Board. “Certification ensures screen protectors meet stringent requirements for blue light filtration, to assure consumers the products they use provide effective protection.”

Upon certification, Eyesafe assigns each screen protector a Radiance Protection Factor (RPF®). RPF is a metric used to quantify the amount of blue light protection provided by a screen protector. The RPF scale ranges from RPF20 to RPF80, with higher numbers indicating greater blue light protection. The scale was developed with input from doctors and healthcare leaders to offer a clear, standardized measure of blue light filtration, ensuring consumers have access to high-quality screen protection that preserves vibrant display colors.

TÜV Rheinland’s blue light reduction program is available worldwide for screen protection companies. Upon certification, brands will be able to use the TÜV Rheinland Certified and RPF marks on their products, packaging and marketing collateral to communicate achievement of industry-leading requirements.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with TÜV Rheinland, together setting a high standard for blue light filtration and color,” remarked Justin Barrett, the CEO of Eyesafe. “The Eyesafe Accessory Requirements, developed in collaboration with ophthalmologists and optometrists, underscores our shared dedication to digital wellness and raises the bar for blue light screen protection.”
