Eyesafe® Standards and Certification FAQ

What is Eyesafe® Display Requirements 2.0?

The Eyesafe® Display Requirements 2.0 are intended primarily for electronic products with displays that typically emit visible radiation in the range of 380 to 780 nm. The Requirements focus on limiting blue light emissions to address the growing body of research suggesting potential risks of blue light exposure.

The Eyesafe® Display Requirements and Certification also address the industry’s need for accurate color quality and have been broadly adopted by leading OEMs and panel manufacturers.

The Eyesafe® Display Requirements for blue light emissions and color performance align with international standards and guidelines developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). The Requirements quantify blue light radiation levels to human eyes using the aforementioned standards’ spectral weighting function B(λ) for retinal Blue Light Hazard and overseeing all-optical hazards in the visible spectral range.

Why is certification important?

The Eyesafe® Certification program is well-adopted in the industry and creates a seal of approval to identify a low blue light display. Customers can easily find and pick the low blue light displays during their purchase experience. This certification is performed by well-known and trusted independent third-party TÜV Rheinland. A certified product confirms that this product meets defined criteria and the corresponding test marks (Eyesafe® Certified) provide customers visible proof of quality to make a better decision.

What are the benefits of the Eyesafe® Certification program?

The Eyesafe® Certification program marks can significantly boost your brand image and increase your market success. Eyesafe® Certified is becoming the globally trusted brand for blue light protection. The test mark provides your customers a clear decision-making aid and gives you a clear competitive advantage. The Eyesafe® Certification program comes with a series of marketing benefits as well.

What is the process for the Eyesafe® Certification program?

  1. Fill out and submit the application form (please contact TÜV Rheinland for more information)
  2. Provide required documents (panel specification, panel label with model name)
  3. Send units to TÜV lab for testing
  4. TÜV test sample based on the requirement
  5. TÜV sends the test report to the customer and Eyesafe
  6. TÜV and Eyesafe issues certificate for the customer

What is the difference between the new and the old certification program?

Eyesafe® Display Requirements 2.0 is based on analysis of over 370 research studies on the known and potential risks of high-energy blue light. The 2.0 requirements focus on the Blue Light Toxicity Factor (BLTF) and provides a simplified blue light index, or RPF scale.

Key differences between the old program and new program:

  • The new Eyesafe® Certification requirement focuses on BLTF as a primary metric to measure blue light risk for display.  The BLTF must be <0.085, which is the same as the current Eyesafe® Certification Program.
  • Displays will need to achieve color performance requirements similar to the current program.
  • Based upon analysis of the literature, Blue light ratio will not be required for Eyesafe® Certification under the new program guidelines.

The new certification program introduces a continuous blue light metric, called the Radiance Protection Factor (RPF®). Customers can use the Eyesafe® Certified 2.0 logo. As an OPTION, customers are encouraged to also use the new RPF continuous metric as a new marketing tool.

RPF® is calculated using a scaling factor that is based on the current technological limits of recent LCD and OLED technologies. The goal is to provide the end-user with a number (1-100) that reflects the blue light toxicity of the display, effectively simplifying the complex blue light toxicity formula used for measurement. Similar to how Sun Protection Factor (SPF) measures protection for the skin, the RPF® scale measures blue light emissions and potential risk for the eyes. The higher the number, the better — in essence, higher RPF® numbers indicate a greater reduction of high-energy blue light in a display.

How is the model RPF level assigned to a device with multiple display panels?

The level assigned will be the lowest of the panels certified. Subsequent new panels submitted for certification will be required to meet the model RPF level achieved.

The RPF scale is in increments of 10. This scale was determined to allow for typical display variation. The device needs to meet AT LEAST the BLTF threshold. Below is the reference:

BLTF Range RPF
0.085≥BLTF>0.0829 35
0.0829≥BLTF>0.0791 40
0.0791≥BLTF>0.0752 50
0.0752≥BLTF>0.0716 60
0.0716≥BLTF>0.0678 70
0.0678≥BLTF>0.0640 80
0.0640≥BLTF>0.0603 90

When will the new certification marks be launched?

On May 11, 2022, we officially announced the new Eyesafe® Certification based on the new Eyesafe® Display Requirements 2.0. The new program is available starting July 1, 2022.

Who is allowed to use the new Eyesafe® Certification program marks?

The new Eyesafe® Certification program will be available starting on July 1, 2022. To create a smooth transition for the existing customers, we have extended the last date to apply for the previous certification program to the end of 2022. During this transition time, TÜV Rheinland will provide support for customers to transition to the new Eyesafe® Certification program. If you have any questions please contact us using the form below.

What marks can I use?

Products that are certified after July 1, 2022 should use the new certification marks. Contact your TÜV Representative for artwork and please reference the Eyesafe® Certification Sales and Marketing Guide for brand guidelines.

Will existing marks still be valid?

Yes, the existing Eyesafe® Certified marks will be valid based on the validity terms of the contract. If the customer applied for one or two years’ terms, they can keep using the certified marks. To provide a better transition experience for the customers, customers can apply for the existing Eyesafe® Certification program until December 31, 2022.

Can I change the marks?

Eyesafe® Certification program marks may not be altered. Only official artwork versions of the marks should be used. If you have any questions about design or brand assets, contact us using the form below.

Can I start using the new marks even if my certificate was issued before July 1, 2022, and shows the “old” marks?

No, for any new inquiries for the new Eyesafe® Certification program, the customer needs to contact their TÜV representative for guidance.

Can I upgrade my current Eyesafe® Certified product to the new mark?

Yes, a device can be upgraded 1) through the remaining term of the current certification or, 2) by renewing the current certification at the time of its expiration. In both cases, your local TÜV Rheinland representative will provide pricing.

How can I identify the old and new marks?

How to identify old and new marks.

Is TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light (Hardware) Required?

No, Eyesafe Certification 2.0 is a stand-alone mark.

Eyesafe has partnered with TÜV Rheinland to provide all certification of devices to the Eyesafe Certification 2.0 requirements, but any additional certification is not required.

Do I need to start using the new marks if I obtain a certificate issued after July 1, 2022?

Yes, customers may take advantage of the new Eyesafe® Certified 2.0 marks. After the expiration date of the previous Eyesafe® Display Certification program, the old marks will no longer be valid.

What happens to products that are already certified?

Products that are already Eyesafe® Certified are valid for the term listed on the certificate. Once the certificate expires, manufacturers will need to re-certify products under the new display requirements.

Two certification programs may be confusing to end customers, what is the transition timing to one low blue light certification program?

TÜV Rheinland and Eyesafe are working to transition the Low Blue Light (Hardware) requirements to use the Eyesafe 2.0 requirements. Both companies understand products are under design now and are looking to transition in mid-2023.
